How to transfer the ownership of motor vehicles?
When you sell your own vehicle, you have to get the ownership of vehicle transferred in the name of the buyer. Vehicle ownership transfer is generally known as “RC transfer”. It is very important because it ensures that the vehicle and all the legal liabilities related to it are transferred to the buyer, for that you need to file an application to the concerned Regional Transport Office or RTO. Within 14 days of the sale of the vehicle you need to apply for the RC transfer and then you have to intimate the RTO and apply for Vehicle transfer ownership. On an average, the RC transfer will happen within 21-30 days, and then come RTO’s claims to transfer within 7 days. It depends on the RTO’s. How is the RC transfer done?
The task is divided into two parts-
1. Online application and Payment
2. Offline verification of documents and submission
Let’s check the steps for online application and payment for transfer of ownership of motor vehicle:
Step 1: Go to the website of Parivahan Sewa.
Step 2: Click on the online services option in the top left corner.
Step 3: A drop-down menu will appear Vehicle-related services option
Step 4: Enter your Vehicle Registration Number and proceed to the next step.
Step 5: Choose the option Misc Online Services for transfer of ownership, changing address etc.
Step 6: Fill all the required details for proceeding to the next step. Put the last 5 digit of the chassis number, generate OTP by entering your registered mobile number and then click on show details option.
Step 7: In the Application Selection option, select the Transfer Ownership and fill up all the required details of the new owner.
Step 8: After filling the details proceed to the payment option [Note: sometimes the transaction gets timed out or gets cancelled at the first attempt but after a while, you can re-initiate the payment again]
Step 9: Printout the receipt of the payment of both Form 29 and Form 30.
Step 10: If you want to check the application status, click on<>See your application status—Enter Vehicle Registration Number and click on Status. In case you want to reprint the receipt to click on Reprint receipt/form or Check Pending Transaction then select application type and details and click on Transaction Id.
If you are not comfortable for the online application you can apply it offline as well but you need to make the payment online and the rest you can do offline. For offline verification of documents and submission, you need to documents. Check out what documents you need for applying offline.
Documents Required Offline
• Two copies of Form 29
• One copy of Form 30
• Original Registration Certificate and a photocopy
• Receipt of online payment
• Self Attested copy of valid vehicle insurance certificate
• Self Attested copy of address proof of the registered vehicle transferor
• Self Attested copy of Pollution Certificate or PUC of the transferor
• Self Attested copy of two address proof of the transferee or the new vehicle owner
• Passport size photo of the transferee or the new owner
• Chassis or Engine Print of Form 29 and 30. If the Chassis Print is not clear then only go for Engine Print.
• Adhar card of both the transferor and transferee of the vehicle.
Take all these listed documents with you and you will be able to transfer the ownership of the vehicle without much issue.
